It’s my SF short story (currently being adapted into a film by Hedwig’s own John Cameron Mitchell) it’s free, and comes along with an OCEAN AT THE END OF THE LANE preview — you can read the first 3 chapters, a month before publication. It’s up on Amazon now and you can download it to your Kindle or, if you do not have a Kindle,  to Kindle software on your computer, phone, tablet etc.

Feel very free to spread this one around.

In the UK, that’s http://www.amazon.co.uk/o/ASIN/B00C2UUJX4?tag=adapas-21 instead, or at Google Play for Books at https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=SP1Mzpj9F1IC

this is often how @neilhimself stands when he’s twittering in public. i am so glad to have caught this moment, because I look at it all the time.

She assures me that this is indeed how I stand when I am tweeting or texting.
How odd.

Neil, you drew me a rat. I was 13 and now, almost a decade later, its still one of my favorite things. Thanks Neil!

And suddenly, 11 years of drawing rats on Coralines feels perfectly justified.

This was posted on Twitter…  It’s from the UK Sunday Times (can’t see a link to it).

(Also, I went and checked the email exchange, and I spelled irrelevant correctly. Which puzzles me, about the Sunday Times and the concept of spell checking.)

Death by Skottie Young

”A demon can get into real trouble, doing the right thing.” He nudged the angel. “Funny if we both got it wrong, eh? Funny if I did the good thing and you did the bad one, eh?”
“Not really,” said Aziraphale.
Crawly looked at the rain.
“No,” he said, sobering up. “I suppose not.”

This is a tour of epic proportions, people. Also the last time that Neil Gaiman will be doing a book signing tour. Get those tickets while you can! The book is excellent and I’m sure the tour will be out of this world.

(With any luck, Neil will survive the tour, but that is another matter entirely)

The William Morrow press office just sent me the dates and locations of the OCEAN AT THE END OF THE LANE tour.

This may be modified slightly as we go — I’ll add any additional information (there’s nothing on ticket prices here, for example — most stores will count your ticket cost toward the cost of the book.)

The current plan is that I’ll sign any copies of The Ocean at the End of the Lane for you, and one or two other things, depending on lines and numbers. This may change.

I’ll also plan to sign as much as possible of what the bookstore has of mine when I get to each new shop, including many copies of OCEAN. So you can watch me read and do a Q&A and then take off if you do not want to wait.

Many shops will have leftover signed books after the signing, or will take preorders for a book to be signed and sent out. I’ll sign all the books that each store needs signed, but there’s no guarantee that I’ll be able to personalise phone/internet orders.

And yes, this will be my last US book-signing tour. And I’m going to try and do as much as possible of it in a bus, mostly so I can get more sleep than I did on the Anansi Boystour.

Feel very free to spread the information around. (UK & Canada & the rest of the world signing information is not in this post.)

For the record, Elyse was the only reason I survived the 2008 Graveyard Book tour. And that was a reading tour, not a signing tour.

I would move to America for things like this.

Literary perverts, make some noise! Some quiet, muffled noise.

True Stories With Audiobooks: One time I found myself listening to Mr. Gaiman narrate some details of Tristran Thorn’s conception whilst sitting in a crowded hospital waiting room. This was pre-“50 Shades of public transport” days. Glancing around at strangers like: “THEY CAN TELL”

The last story I had to record last week (when I did the OCEAN AT THE END OF THE LANE and SMOKE AND MIRRORS audiobooks in Austin) was “Tastings” from Smoke and Mirrors. I remembered that the story contained a lot of sex, but it wasn’t real to me quite how much until I had to read it, to an audience consisting of an extremely beautiful female sound engineer who had listened to me read for six days. And who hadn’t heard anything like that. (I also realised I’d never read it aloud before.)
I worry I’ll get stern letters, when the book comes out.

7 Great quotes about libraries on photos of beautiful libraries

With libraries around the world in danger of extinction, Flavorwire posted a series of great quotes about libraries from famous writers. I decided to pair them with some of the world’s most beautiful libraries. You’re welcome;

  1. Trinity College Library - University of Dublin
  2. University Club Library – New York City
  3. Admont Abbey Library – Austria
  4. Real Gabinete Português de Leitura – Rio de Janeiro
  5. Suzzalo Library at the University of Washington – Seattle
  6. Yale University’s Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library
  7. Canadian Library of Parliament – Ottawa

Unnatural Creatures: Stories Selected by Neil Gaiman by Neil Gaiman
Received my ARC today. This looks like an excellent collection.
Stories include selections from Neil Gaiman, Diana Wynne Jones, E. Nesbit, Peter S. Beagle, and some other classic authors, but there are also stories by Nalo Hopkinson, Megan Kurashige, Nnedi Okorafor, and E. Lily Yu. The only way I could possibly be more excited to read this would be if there was also an N.K. Jemisin story.
While the male authors picked are all white dudes, I actually kind of like the way that works out. Many of the stories by men in this collection are by guys who are dead, and if this was someone’s only exposure to fantasy I think one would have to draw the conclusion that white men are the history of the genre and that the future of fantasy storytelling is represented by a fairly diverse group of women.

I’m really proud of this collection. And I don’t think that would be a particularly wrong-headed conclusion, either.
Puzzled to learn that Samuel R. Delany, aka Chip Delany to his friends, whose story ‘Prismatica’ I reprint in Unnatural Creatures for the first time in 35 years, is now thought of as a white dude, though. He does have a long white beard.
