Negative Space Letterforms by Tamsin Fraser

I’m excited to be posting up this project by the very talented Tamsin Fraser (co conspirator of TF+BM). 

“Our eyes have been trained to recognise letterforms as positive forms; the question my project poses is whether legibility remains when letterforms are created within negative space.

The custom type I have developed sees each letter and word approached individually within a system that allows for expression of the calligraphic foundations. The essential form of each letter remains constant, with the strokes that define it altering depending on the preceding and following letters.

Three weights; light, medium and bold were developed and demonstrated in a poster series and wallpaper roll. In addition two publications were produced- book; an alphabet book with the type system’s base forms, and bookbook; a documentation of the project’s development.

The unpredictability and imperfections of silkscreen printing and embossing all of the outcomes simulates the variation of form in hand-written calligraphic script. My hope is that each viewer is engaged with the design and deciphers each letter, triggering a little moment of delight when a word becomes visible.”
